Turning Black & White Photos into Stunning Watercolor Art: A Step-by-Step Guide

This was such a fun project that the whole family contributed to!  We even gave some away as gifts and the prints are showcased in their owner’s home today.;)

I originally saw this idea from Better Homes & Gardens.

We did some fun ones but I have seen lovely professional children’s photos.  It just adds the perfect touch of whimsy.  I’m a sucker for anything whimsical!

Here’s the Step-By-Step (Please note that you may need to lighten your photos as color will not show up on dark prints):

  1.  Convert a digital phone to black-and-white (again, it may make sense to lighten some)
  2. Print it from a laser printer on lightweight cardstock or watercolor paper
  3. Use watercolors & a soft paint brush to tint details of the image.  Leave the rest of the print unaltered.
  4. Let dry for at least 3 hours.

TIP: It will be hard to use dark photos as the color will not show up. You can lighten your photos prior to printing to help. Also think about what you would accent w/ color in your photo & make sure that area is light enough that the color will show up.
